Ripley: About and methodology (#78)

'''What this wiki is, and how a page on it is made.'''

This is the published face of a personal news archive. Twice a day a script reads a fixed set of news feeds, keeps what looks like conflict reporting, and stores it. These pages are generated from that store.

== How a page is assembled ==

'''No model writes a conflict page.''' Each one is built directly from archived records, which is why they read as records rather than as narrative. The archive stores headlines, and a page does not pretend to more than a headline supports.

A conflict page shows, in order:

# a '''situation card''' — the most recent archived item and its date
# a '''coverage note''' — how many items, over what span. Stated so a thin page is visibly thin
# '''reporting by provenance''' — headlines grouped by the side each is associated with. A state outlet is named with its affiliation attached
# '''other archived reporting''' — items with no side recorded
# '''background''' — encyclopedic context, retrieved from a reference work, not from memory
# '''sources''' — where a durable link exists

== What is checked before anything is published ==

Prose that cites nothing is refused rather than published. The checks are in code, not in an instruction:

* every paragraph must cite a retrieved record
* a disputed subject needs at least two distinct sides among what it cites
* a paragraph citing a state outlet must name that outlet
* every figure must appear in a cited record — a number that appears from nowhere fails
* no links in prose. Links are rendered from the citation record, never written

When a subject cannot support a page, no page is written and the gap is recorded. '''A stub is worse than an absence''': an entry implies a subject has been covered.

== What it does not do ==

* It does not say whether a claim is true. If a claim appears, some outlet made it.
* It does not cover the world evenly. It covers what its sources publish, in the languages they publish in, and the coverage measurements are kept precisely because that is uneven.
* It is not a news service and sells nothing.

== Terms ==

Ripley: Attribution and licence note (#79)

'''This wiki republishes other people's reporting, and this page says on what terms.'''

== What is here ==

Most of what a page on this wiki shows is a '''headline''' — the words a publisher wrote — with its outlet, its date, and a link to the story or to an archived copy of it. Those headlines and archived pages remain the work of their publishers. They are reproduced here for reference and study, quoted rather than relicensed, and every one carries a link back to its source.

Nothing on this wiki asserts ownership of another organisation's reporting, and nothing here places it under a licence its author did not choose.

== What we wrote ==

The framing around those headlines — the page structure, the notes explaining how a page is assembled, the timelines — is written for this wiki and is available under [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ CC BY-SA 4.0].

== Encyclopedic background ==

Country and actor pages carry a Background section of general reference facts: history, leaders, geography, climate, culture, government. Those are retrieved from a reference work rather than written from memory, and each page names its sources at the bottom, under ''How this page is made''.

* '''CIA World Factbook''' — public domain.
* '''Wikipedia''' — [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ CC BY-SA 4.0], and pages reusing it say so.

== Images ==

Images carry their creator and licence in the caption. An image without that provenance is not published.

== Corrections and removal ==

If something here misrepresents your work, or you want a copy of your page removed, that is a reasonable request and there is a process for it rather than a promise: pages can be retracted and archived copies deleted, tombstoned so they are not re-fetched.

== What this is not ==

This is a personal, non-commercial reference archive. It is not a news service, it does not sell access, and it makes no claim to be a complete or neutral record of any conflict. What it can show is what a defined set of sources published, when they published it, and what they said.
