Ukraine
Reporting on Ukraine between 28 May and 26 August 2026 covers Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, a Ukrainian drone campaign on Russian oil infrastructure, prisoner exchanges, and new military developments, according to Legis1 and ukrinform, a Ukrainian state outlet [16][1]. In late May, the diplomatic path to Ukraine peace was rapidly narrowing, according to Legis1 [16].
On 23 August, Russian troops struck an electric train in the Kharkiv region, killing two people and wounding five, according to Meduza [12]. A missile attack on Kharkiv's Osnovianskyi district on 25 August killed one person, mayor Ihor Terekhov said, as reported by ukrinform [6]. Strikes on Konotop on 24 August destroyed a vehicle fleet and left most of the city without gas, according to mayor Artem Semenikhin, as reported by ukrinform [9]. Semenikhin said the strikes were "exclusively on civilian infrastructure" [9].
On 20 August, Ynet, an Israeli outlet, reported that gas stations in Moscow had imposed restrictions on gasoline purchases due to fuel shortages, amid repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries across Russia [8]. Russia confirmed the same day that it had begun importing fuel from abroad, an unusual step for a country that is normally one of the world's largest fuel exporters [8]. The Ukrainian military has been launching hundreds of drones almost daily at oil facilities, factories, and warehouses across Russia, as part of what Kyiv calls "a campaign to bring the war to the Russian citizen" [8].
On 20 August, nine people were killed in Russia and Ukraine, and 206 prisoners returned home in an exchange, according to Ynet [8]. On 25 August, TASS, a Russian state outlet, reported that Russia and Ukraine are working toward a new large-scale prisoner exchange [2]. The United States is ready to help facilitate Russia-Ukraine talks, TASS reported on 24 August [7].
On 25 August, The War Zone reported that Ukraine's Magura family of uncrewed surface vessels gained its largest member, the MV11, designed for open-ocean operations lasting up to a week and carrying payloads up to 4,850 pounds [3]. The MV11 made its public debut at Ukraine's Independence Day parade in Kyiv [3]. Defense News reported on 20 August that Russia is racing to nearly triple its biggest missile barrage, from 77 missiles fired at once to as many as 200, according to the commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces [10]. On 26 August, ukrinform reported that three Russian agents who adjusted enemy missile, bomb, and drone strikes on Donetsk Oblast were sentenced to 15 years each [1].
