On Sunday, 23 August, a meeting between Mossad chief Roman Gofman and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani "went well," a source familiar with the meeting told the Jerusalem Post. [1] The meeting also included the heads of Syria's General and Military Intelligence services, according to N12 News. [1] Shaibani said the meeting dealt with halting Israeli attacks and renewing negotiations for a security agreement, and that the Syrian side emphasized the need to reduce tensions between Israel and Turkey, fearing that tensions would spill over into Syrian territory. [1] The Syrian delegation stressed its opposition to an agreement that would prohibit it from building up its military and forging alliances, and wanted discussions on the Golan Heights to be conducted separately. In June, a Syrian source told President Ahmad al-Shara feared the political implications of military action against Hezbollah in Lebanon, which could be perceived as intervention "to protect Israel" and thereby damage Damascus's standing in the Arab world, as reported by kipa.co.il.
