Reporting on Ukraine between 28 May and 25 August 2026 covers continued fighting, drone strikes on Russian infrastructure, and diplomatic efforts, with one analysis noting that the diplomatic path to peace was rapidly narrowing. [16][3]

On 20 August, Ynet, an Israeli outlet, reported that gas stations in Moscow had imposed restrictions on gasoline purchases due to fuel shortages, amid repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries across Russia. Reuters reported the restrictions the same day Russia confirmed it had begun importing fuel from abroad. The Ukrainian military has been launching hundreds of drones almost daily at oil facilities, factories, and warehouses across Russia, as part of what Kyiv calls "the campaign to bring the war to the Russian citizen." The report also noted that nine people were killed in Russia and Ukraine and that 206 prisoners returned home in an exchange. [8]

On 23 August, Russian troops struck an electric train in the Kharkiv region, killing two people and wounding five, according to Meduza. [12] On 25 August, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that a missile attack in the Osnovianskyi district of Kharkiv killed one person, with missiles hitting an industrial zone, according to Ukrinform, a Ukrainian state outlet. [6] The same report noted that Russians struck a gas station in Kharkiv, wounding two people, and that a Russian drone attack in Kyiv damaged a residential building. [6]

On 24 August, Ukrinform reported that the enemy struck Konotop several times, destroying a vehicle fleet and leaving most of the city without gas. Mayor Artem Semenikhin stated that all strikes were on civilian infrastructure and that no casualties were reported. [9]

On 23 August, TASS, a Russian state outlet, reported that nearly 270 Ukrainian drones were taken down over Russian regions during the day. [11] On 25 August, TASS reported one civilian killed and eight others injured in Ukrainian attacks on the DPR. [2] On the same day, Ukrinform reported 173 clashes on the front, with the Armed Forces of Ukraine neutralizing over 70 occupiers in the Pokrovsk direction. [1] On 20 August, Defense News, a US outlet, reported that Russia was preparing to nearly triple its biggest missile barrage, from 77 missiles to as many as 200, according to the commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces.
